NYS Maple Weekends - March 21 & 22 and March 28 & 29!

Spring is in the air and that means the NYS Maple Weekends are here! Looking for the best place to exercise your taste buds? Well, you’re in luck! Here is an Insider’s guide to all of the “Maple” events happening in Ontario County. The action begins on Saturday, March 21 & Sunday, March 22 and continues Saturday, March 28 & Sunday, March 29.

Come on, Ithaca, we thought you were tougher than that?!  I guess we’re just built a little hardier here in Ontario County.  I’m sure we can find some extra mittens for anyone in Tompkins County afraid to go out in a little snow.  Maybe you can use the white flag that's been waving as a scarf?

Of course, we're just having a little fun here with our good friends in Ithaca because we so appreciate their sense of humor regarding how to deal with this winter that seems to want to go on and on. We also know that all of us here in the Finger Lakes share wonderful winter assets that are worth bragging about - even as the snow is piling up and the temperature wants to hover around...brrrrrr degrees.

On January 23rd we celebrate National Handwriting Day in the Finger Lakes! It’s an important day, considering even with the changes of technology, we are still constantly communicating with handwriting. Growing up, I remember learning that penmanship was very important and that I wanted mine to be perfect and have a style. I remember in second grade that I couldn’t wait until it was my turn to be in charge of the chalk board for the week.
As I write this, it’s 36 degrees outside (January 19, 2015), a relative “heatwave” given the temperatures we’ve had in the area (just yesterday it was 2 degrees – and no I did not forget the zero – that would be two degrees.  I enjoy stretching my mind to think what I should write in this blog. Of course, in those ponderings, I can’t help but think about the weather. After all, it’s right in front of me and envelopes us every day, for better or for worse.  I say we focus on the better!

I thought back to my conversations in the last couple of weeks and although they’ve been about the weather a bit, I must say that I am amply impressed with how positive they are.  We Finger Lakers are, overall, a very positive bunch; at least the ones I hang out with. Maybe that’s why we’re in tourism because we tend to be optimists. How do I make the most of this situation?  It’s important to keep that tone and that attitude when you’re sharing why tourists should come visit here.

My Finger Lakes New Year's Resolutions

Tuesday, December 30, 2014 9:32 AM by AJ Shear

I recently read a statistic that 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. The top 5? It’s the usual boring stuff:

1. Lose weight
2. Get organized
3. Spend less, save more
4. Enjoy life to the fullest
5. Learn something new and exciting

I’m not too keen on these, so this year, I’ve decided to turn the top five New Year’s resolutions into Finger Lakes resolutions! Here’s how I recommend adapting America’s top 5 New Year’s resolutions to Finger Lakes resolutions.
I had my list. Ten must-visit attractions. And six hours to see them.

Piece of cake, right?

It sure helps to know a local. My friend NYLaurie, who calls me AZLaurie, plotted an impressive route. Starting at Simply Crepes in Canandaigua, where three of us ordered three crepes and divided each into thirds, was a smart move!

Six ways to keep warm in the Finger Lakes

Tuesday, December 9, 2014 4:30 PM by David Lee

Brr… that’s right - it’s that time of year when you find every way possible to keep warm. As Nat King Cole puts it “Baby it’s cold outside.” So kick back and relax while enjoying your favorite glass of a warm Finger Lakes something. Maybe it’s a cup coffee from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters or mulled wine from White Springs Winery.

Here are some more of my favorite Finger Lakes “goods” and tips to keep warm this winter!

Finger Lakes Visitors Connection is pleased to be a part of the 2014 Sonnenberg Tour of Homes. We hope that you’ll all get out to take advantage of this fundraiser and glimpse of Canandaigua – and its lifestyle.

The tourism bureau moved into 25 Gorham Street in August of 2003. See the picture at right.  We actually had one member of the team call it the "Chia Pet" house.

Small Business Saturday falls on Nov. 29th. It’s a great opportunity to get holiday shopping done while supporting your local community and the businesses that need each and every one of us to flourish. In this weekend’s Pick Six blog, we share the Finger Lakes Insiders tips on where to shop for Small Business Saturday.
