It’s that time of the year again—Valentine’s Day—and love is in the air. Whether you find yourself single or with that special someone this year, there are plenty of things for you to do to in the Finger Lakes to make it a memorable day. Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, so that gives us all even more opportunities to take advantage of lots of fun things leading up to the big day. Here are 14 fun options for those celebrating Valentine’s Day, single or together.

Happy holidays. I do hope your Christmas and holiday preparations are going well. I love the Finger Lakes any season of the year—but I especially enjoy them around the holidays. And if you’re still looking for something to put you in a festive mood, there’s plenty of holiday cheer to be had this season! Here are a few

Autumn is drawing to a close. Most of the leaves have fallen, along with the temperatures, though there are the stubborn few still clinging to their branches, unwilling to move on to winter. Here in Ontario County in the Finger Lakes, the first snow has come and gone. But before we move on to winter, there's still more to celebrate this fall.

4 famous women who made Ontario County history

Women make history every day, but we Americans tend to save the celebration for March, thanks to proclamations signed by President Jimmy Carter and President Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1987, respectively. Carter created a National Women’s History Week from March 2-8, and Reagan extended it to the entire month.

Living in Ontario County, I am reminded about some of our lady history makers every day with the architecture I see, the artwork I admire and the stories I hear on a regular basis.

A Finger Lakes Fourth of July

There’s something to be said about observing traditions, and celebrating the birth of our nation is, if anything, paramount to that rule. But whether you’re looking for a change of pace or want to create new traditions entirely, the Finger Lakes has some truly spectacular ways to celebrate all things U.S.A.

Fireworks: If there’s anything critically essential to celebrating the Fourth of July it has to be a good firework show and if there’s one thing we in the Finger Lakes know, it’s how to put on a good show! In fact, three of our communities celebrate with fireworks

Happy Mother's Day - Barbara J. Gifford, Sandra Banas, Jackie Miltner, Janice Hicks, Cindy Blair, Gayle Cappelluti and Taylor's Mom - this call out is for you ... the "mother's of our Finger Lakes tourism team!" I posed the question late on Thursday to everyone - if you could take your mother to just one local place on Mother's Day, where would that be? Drum roll - here are your tourism bureau's answers!

But, before I really get into the Mother's Day treat ideas, I want to make a special call-out to my assistant, Carol Hicks - who along with me - is a "Sandwich Mother." I actually don't know if that term exists or not, but if not, I'll define it as "the extra special woman on Mother's Day who balances being celebrated as a mother, as well as celebrating her own mother." (as opposed to a mother who only makes PBJ sandwiches for the kids). I know that Carol shares my sentiments about motherhood, and to use one of her favorite phrases, "it's awesome."

1,000 points of light? Try 100,000!

When I was a kid, my parents would drive my sisters and me around town on Christmas Eve so we could ooh and aaah all the great holiday lights and decorations.

Given my eagerness to get to bed early to ensure Santa's arrival, I didn’t always appreciate the long detours Dad would take as he drove the car through neighborhoods sparkling with house and lawn displays that included snowmen, nativity scenes, and blazing rooftop reindeer.

Now that I know that Santa works on flex-time, I’m not as worried about getting to bed early. I still like to drive around and see how the outdoor halls are decked. Here are some standout destinations in Ontario County for those of you who share my fascination with holiday displays.
