The 8th annual Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition & Festival will run from June 4th–9th, 2019, and will again be held under the auspices of the Ontario County Arts Council (“OCAC”). For those of you who are new to this event, “Plein Air” is a French word meaning in the “open air.” “Plein Air” painting refers to paintings done wholly outside and is a historic art form thought to produce paintings of luminous light and beauty.
During this year’s festival, both nationally-known and locally-recognized artists will paint the beauty of beauty of Canandaigua and the surrounding areas, rain or shine, and then offer their paintings to you for purchase. The festival culminates in a ticketed preview party ($35) on Saturday night, June 8, from 6–9 p.m., held at the newly-renovated permanent tent at Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, and in a free, day-long Sunday exhibition and sale at Sonnenberg Garden’s Carriage House on June 9.
Special events include a day-long “Paint Out” centered in Naples, NY on Thursday, June 6, and a “Quick Draw” by the juried-in artists, to be held in downtown Canandaigua on Saturday, June 8. All local artists can also compete in a “Community Paint Out” on Main Street Canandaigua on Sunday, June 9, and have their works displayed during the free Sunday exhibition.
As we enter our eighth year, we continue our efforts to establish this festival as the preeminent arts event in the Finger Lakes region. Our vision is to welcome art buyers and the public to an event celebrating the unique beauty of the Finger Lakes. This is a high-end festival designed to give our region, along with Canandaigua, a solid presence in the art community, while ensuring access to the arts to anyone, regardless of income. Please join us as we celebrate the arts in Ontario County!
