Looking for something to do in the Finger Lakes?
Need some sort of "recreation" inside or outside for any month of
the year? How about a simple list to give you some of the most popular
ideas of what to do in any one of our seasons? Below are some of
the most requested activities. For a complete list of activities
- search through our recreation button above - or visit NaturesHealthClub.com.
Get active and enjoy the Finger Lakes!
January
Inside: Walk the mall. Bonus - you might even find some great after Christmas sales!
Outside: Ski or snowboard on the slopes of Bristol Mountain!
February
Inside: Ice skate in our covered areas. Geneva Recreation Center and the Canandaigua Civic Center! Outside: Cross country ski. We're almost always guaranteed a good snow cover at this point in the winter!
March
Inside: Take some lessons at the South Bristol Cultural Center. Everything from drumming to dancing to art! Choose your level of activity and pursue your special interests.
Outside: The birds are returning from migration. Grab your binoculars and your camera and get outside for the first glimpses of the geese, a red winged blackbird or a robin. Be sure to clean your feeders and get them ready, they'll be hungry from their long journeys.
April
Inside: Go to Hobart William Smith Colleges or Finger Lakes Community College and check out some of the activities they have going on. Great art shows, sporting events, and more await you at these college venues. The walk from the parking lot alone fills your lungs with fresh air!
Outside: It's the start of fishing season! Learn at Willow Pond Aqua Farms and then tackle the bigger lakes. Don't let the BIG one get away.
May
Inside: Gardening is upon us - and if you check out the interesting
garden stores you'll cover a few miles of walking. Volunteer some
time at those attractions that put together some special displays!
Outside: Golf. Ten courses, great views. Nothing more needs to be
said!
June
Inside: This is really an inside and outside idea - but pick one of our small towns and walk the streets. Check out the stores along the way!
Outside: Stroll the grounds of Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Site. It's Rose Month and you can smell the roses everywhere!
July
Inside: OK - so we know that most people want to be outside enjoying
our great Finger Lakes summer weather during this month, but how
about a combo deal? Take in a concert at the C-MAC performing arts
center. Sit under the covered part and you're almost inside. But,
no matter where you sit, the performances are memorable. Outside:
Pick your own strawberries (you've got to do this early in July
- but it's a luscious way to start the month!)
August
Inside: This is another month that we love the outdoors here - but hey - on a rainy or just too hot day head inside to any one of our 15 historical society museums.
Outside: You just have to do something on the lakes. Paddleboat, wind surf (you can rent the equipment and take some lessons at Canandaigua Sailboarding!). Enjoy the lakes at their finest! P.S. Don't forget the Roseland Waterpark either.
September
Inside: While the wineries may not seem like a lot of exercise - they can be if you make sure you take the walking tour along with your tasting. It's a popular time and perhaps you can add a stroll through their gift shops and a little weightlifting to take home that favorite Finger Lakes Wine.
Outside: It has to be biking for this month! The air's crisp, but not cold, the fall colors are great. Basically, it's a gorgeous time in the Finger Lakes.
October
Inside: Granted it's "mild" recreation - but we must insist that
you use October to consider a ride on the Finger Lakes Scenic Railway.
Take a little walk around the boarding spots in Clifton Springs
and Geneva and that'll fulfill the other side of the recreation
equation. Outside: Hiking. Make it a short one or a longer version…another
great time in the Finger Lakes to enjoy the changing of the seasons.
One place to hike during this season is the apple orchard and you
can even pick your own!
November
Inside: Walk around Granger Homestead and check out the Festival of Trees. It's a low intensity event for sure - but it gets you in the seasonal spirit.
Outside: Cut your own tree at the Victor Christmas Tree Farms! Good, healthy family fun waits.
December
Inside: It's Holiday Cooking time! Get out and take a hands-on cooking
class at the New York Wine and Culinary Center-exercise your culinary
skills and make some great holiday dishes.
Outside: The first snowfall has usually arrived by now. How long
has it been since you made a snow angel, snowman or had a good old
fashioned snowball fight? Get friends and family together and go
out and play in the snow.
