Nature’s Health Club Trail
In case you haven't heard, the Finger Lakes boasts a health, beauty and fitness center that has no membership fee, offers a never-ending supply of fresh air, is open year-round, has a beautiful atmosphere and makes you look and feel your best. We call it Nature's Health Club, and we encourage you to make it part of your Finger Lakes R&R vacation package.
Victor Hiking Trails has more than 30 miles of mixed-use trails that pass through secluded woodland rambles, streamside walks, longer distance cross-town hiking trails, and well-connected multi-use trails. The latter are suitable for biking and cross-country skiing as well. Pets too are welcome as long as they are leashed. Victor Hiking Trails offers guided hikes on the second Saturday morning of most months. Check the website for schedule.
Cumming Nature Center near Naples has 6 miles of hiking trails, 15 miles of cross-country skiing trails, and 3 miles of snowshoeing trails. The 900-acre preserve is rustic and peaceful.
Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill in South Bristol is where you'll have some of the most stunning high altitude views of the Finger Lakes ever. The 400-acre park has 12 miles of multi-use trails as well as a section of the 50-mile Bristol Hills Trail, which is a spur of the Finger Lakes Trail. At the end of your invigorating hike, enjoy a picnic at the park's pavilion.
Hemlock-Canadice State Forest has boat launches on both the northern and southern ends of Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, two of the most pristine and untouched Finger Lakes. Explore these waters by canoe or kayak for a true retreat into nature. Bring your binoculars, as you're likely to see bald eagles. Canadice Lake Outfitters offers canoe and kayak rentals.
Stid Hill Wildlife Management Area in the towns of Bristol and South Bristol beckons adventurous mountain bikers to 37 miles of rugged hills, ravines, gullies, woods, and open fields. This little-used recreation area will let you feel like you've come upon one of the Finger Lakes' best-kept secrets.
The Town of Gorham has some of the most serene back-road cycling you can imagine, some of it along the eastern shore of Canandaigua Lake. Get ready to see hawks, turkeys, deer as well as farm animals, barns, and the sparkling lake. What you won't see is traffic or grumpy people.
