Fishing in The Finger Lakes

With the Finger Lakes’ clear waters and breathtaking scenery, it is an ideal place to cast your line and fish for a couple of hours or for the day!

Both warm and cold-water fishing is abundant in Ontario County's five Finger Lakes, with lake trout, black bass, Atlantic salmon, and walleye cited as some of the most frequent catches. Geneva is cited as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World” for its annual National Lake Trout Derby on Seneca Lake in May. Meanwhile Naples Creek and other area streams draw springtime anglers casting their lines for rainbow trout.

The fun doesn’t stop when the temperatures drop, either. Ice fishing is a popular Finger Lakes pastime, and once the lakes begin to freeze, you can spot people heading out on the ice to try their hand at it.

Remember, in New York State, you only need a license to fish if you are 16 or older. Try it out - you never know what you will catch!
