Ontario County is called, "the Mother of Counties".
This is because it was the first county formed in western New York.
In 1789, New York State divided Ontario into many more counties.
What remained for this central Finger Lakes county is the stately
collection of architecture and history in our small cities of Geneva
and Canandaigua, as well as unique settings of the small towns which
dot the countryside. The Ontario
County Historical Society and twelve other historical museums
across Ontario County feature the growth and development of Ontario
County since 1789. Consider taking a driving tour of the area -
taking in not only the towns, but the great countryside around the
area. You'll quickly learn why Progressive
Farmer picked Ontario County, NY as the number one rural county
in the United States in 2006. To learn even more about the places
around Ontario County click on one of the names on the map or on
the town's name below for a direct website link to their site and

treasures' found in the Finger Lakes. History buffs, as well as Techno geeks, will enjoy this.
