Grab your telescope, blanket and bug spray because it’s time get ready for the total solar eclipse coming to a sky near you April 8 … 2024?! That’s right! We’re aware that’s about a lightyear away, but we already can’t wait.

And we’re not the only ones. There’s already been some media hype orbiting around 2024’s total eclipse. Amazingly, 2017’s eclipse was viewed by more than 150 million people! And 2024’s eclipse will last even longer than usual, taking the moon four minutes to move in front of the sun.

The best part—New York is one of 15 states in the U.S. located in the path of totality and the Upstate NY region is considered a prime viewing location!

So even though you have time to prepare, why not use the impending total eclipse as an excuse to scope out your perfect skygazing spot in the Finger Lakes? There’s no better (or more beautiful) place to navigate your way through stellar parks, celestial lakeside views and starry overlooks before the big day. To help, here’s a list of spots that shine bright in our eyes.

I was on my way home from a family reunion a while ago and came over a small hill and literally stopped.  I looked across the expansive fields of hay bales, into the white clouds, blue skies, and green, green, green. I knew that just about 18 miles away was Canandaigua – bustling with tourists and waterfront activity. Beyond that in another 20 miles is Rochester with nearly 350,000 people. Right now though, in my world over that hill, there were no people – and that’s the kind of moment that is just as precious in our tourism world.  Real, authentic, fresh air in the country! I was in Gorham, New York.

During this time of social distancing and shift to finding new outdoor adventures, I see some gorgeous Finger Lakes photography happening on Instagram! With all of the region's breathtaking vistas, it is such a remarkable experience watching visitors see our backyard in their own individual ways.

Hiking the trails of Ontario County is fun to do in any season, but if you’re looking to add a new twist to your next adventure, consider Geocaching. Remember to adhere to social distancing guidelines when you head out!

Simply put, geocaching is a treasure hunt. It’s the activity of hunting for, and finding, a hidden object by using GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates that are posted on the Geocaching website. The game is completely free, and you can download the Geocaching app to most smart phones, or you can purchase a hand-held GPS device to help you find hidden geocaches. Once you have the app or a GPS device, you can start finding hidden geocaches anywhere around the world!

Summer in the Finger Lakes is finally here! The sun sets a little later, and the rolling green hills are a bit greener. There’s something about this time of year that seems to put a smile on people’s faces and add extra pep to their step. Let’s harness all that momentum and focus it on summer planning!

Here are a few ideas to jump start your summer fun!

One of the top reasons to visit the Finger Lakes is to experience the natural beauty and breathtaking vistas (after the wine, of course!). With rolling hillsides, wide open spaces and breathtaking views, cycling through the Finger Lakes is an optimal way to explore the region.

From its founding as “Rochesterville” to the third-wave coffee age of today, the city of Rochester has laid claim to plenty of locations and experiences. Despite its recent resurgence, there are still plenty of gems that even the Flower City can’t offer. For these sights, sips and sounds, you have to venture just outside the ROC to the free-spirited beauty and relaxed nature of the Finger Lakes region.

So long, summer. Hello, fall! It’s that time, once again, when pumpkin gets prime billing, sweaters become fashion statements and the leaves reveal their true talents. For many, the crisp air and cool breeze of this unfolding season are practically perfection. To enjoy autumn to the full extent, we’ve put together the Ultimate Finger Lakes Fall Fun Guide.

Grab your friends and family, pick your spots and get ready to go adventuring!
