In 1988, Katsuhiro Otomo transformed his best-selling manga, Akira, into a full-length animated feature.

Akira follows a biker gang as it winds its way through post-apocalyptic Japan, and focuses on the relationship between Kaneda, its leader, and Tetsuo, his best friend who has developed supernatural powers that he must keep hidden from the authorities.

A landmark film in the cyberpunk genre and an allegory for the aftereffects of the atomic bomb, Akira has become one of the most highly acclaimed animated films of the 20th century.
