FLX Tour for Students (a.k.a. Kids!)

The Finger Lakes is the place meant to be the basis of an educational tour for youth. Take a student from the Ganondagan State Historic Site to learn about Native American History. It’s not the wild, wild west but it is the land of the Iroquois who were models of democracy. Here, at the Pickering Rock in Canandaigua, is where the treaty between the United States and the Iroquois was signed promising an early peace as our country was founded.

The Ganondagan State Historic Site and Seneca Art and Culture Center tell the story of the Iroquois contributions to art, culture and society. All ages will be awe-struck by the Seneca Bark Longhouse, the interactive multi-media Exhibit Gallery and the interpretive trails surrounding the center. Native American storytellers bring the site to life with their oral history and hands-on activities connecting nature to the human spirit.

To delve into history of a different sort, visit the Antique Wireless Museum and learn about famous inventors Marconi and Morse, see the first transistor radio and the first cell phone as well as shelf after shelf of radios and televisions from throughout the years. Here is a learning area for Radio Free America.

The Roseland Bowl Family Fun Center offers opportunities for kids to blow off steam and adults to do some team-building with bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, an arcade and fun zone.

Make sure your tour includes an opportunity to get outside and hands-on. Pile on the pancakes and learn about maple sugaring, try your hand at the art of blacksmithing or practice “Yoga in the Pines” at the Cumming Nature Center.  And what could be more hands-on than visiting an Alpaca Farm? These friendly, gentle and curious animals have unique personalities and often appreciate a scratch on the neck!
