Summer weekend at the lake! We travelled to Hamilton for our annual reunion with my husband’s family. Of course, there were the usual cottage activities: boat rides, swimming, bocce games and cook-outs. But, one of my favorite traditions is that everyone goes to the farmers’ market downtown on that Saturday morning.
It reminded me how lucky we are to live in the Finger Lakes! There’s nothing better than browsing the vegetables, fruits and flowers that you know were just picked that same morning. Add to that the locally raised grass-fed beef, free range chicken, and farm-fresh eggs, and you have your “fifty mile meal” in one trip! Most of the farmers’ markets also offer local products like honey and maple syrup, home-made jams, sauces and mustards. Questions? The farmer or producer is right there to answer.
We’re lucky to have so many farmers’ markets in our area – nearly one for every day of the week! The Canandaigua VA Farmers Market is held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30-5, and the Victor Farmers Market is Wednesdays from 3-7pm. Geneva holds their Farmers’ Market on Thursday mornings from 7:30am to 1pm, and Clifton Springs Craft and Farm Market is Friday from 4-8pm. On Saturday mornings you can shop at Canandaigua Farmer’s Market from 8:30 to 12:30, or Honeoye’s Olde Village Market from 7am to noon.
Sunday and Monday? Farm markets like Red Jacket Orchards in Geneva, or Joseph’s Wayside Market in Naples are open 7 days a week. Or stop at one of the dozens of roadside stands along the way! From now through the fall, there’s no reason to miss out on the freshest food available. Make the most of it!
